Majolica is a type of heavy earthenware, design-molded and decorated in vivid colors with either a lead or tin type glaze. It reached its height of popularity in the Victorian era. Examples from this period are found in only the lead glazes. Nearly every potter of note, both here and abroad, produced large majolica jardinieres, umbrella stands, pitchers with animal themes, leaf shapes, vegetable forms and nearly any other design from nature that came to mind. Not all, however, marked their wares. Color and condition are both very important worth-assessing factors. Pieces with cobalt, lavender and turquoise glazes command the highest prices.
